The Salvation Army of Winnebago County and the YMCA of Rock River Valley partnered in January of 2016 to provide a Teen Center for high school students (grades 9-12) in Winnebago County. The Teen Center located at the Salvation Army Kilburn Community Center 210 Kilburn Avenue in Rockford, provides a safe environment for high school students to participate in recreational activities, learn life skills, and build positive relationships. Currently, an average of 50 teens play basketball, interact with other teens, and acquire life skills, such as sportsmanship, conflict resolution, and anger management each week. Programming is available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7-9pm each week, year round and is provided at no cost to the participants. Approximately 1,800 students have attended programming since January 2016.
The Salvation Army is proud to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant for The Salvation Army and YMCA Teen Center. The grant was awarded by the Norris & Margaret Aldeen Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Community Grants Program.
The grant funding will be used between May 2017 and April 2018. This will allow for expansion of the program to include middle school students, grades 6 – 8 Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 to 7 pm. Expanded programming will include healthy lifestyle workshops, health monitoring, and a college and career readiness curriculum for high school students. The funds will also provide additional staff, free transportation and supplies for expanded recreational activities.
